After yesterday I thought I’d post my recap of the race…
Fortunately the weather was perfect: it was fairly warm but there was a cool breeze! The course was relatively flat, with a few unavoidable hills that were absolutely fine compared to the usual slog, I don’t think it is possible to find a less hilly route in Sheffield!!
Also pre-race the toilets were DISGUSTING! Worse than some festival toilets!! There was no water and it smelt awful - not a good start! So just before we set off I needed to pee but didn’t want to use the toilets again, so stupidly didn’t go and had to stop at a portaloo just after mile 2, and waited 7mins to go. This meant that when we rejoined the race, we were near enough at the back. Not good!!
Overall, miles 1-8 were fairly ok. The long uphill stretch felt flat, and had people lining the roads cheering, which was nice. I would say that there weren’t enough drinks on this road. We looped around and on the way back I needed a drink as it was so so warm!! They had cups too, which was massively awkward! I brought a bottle with me and was planning on ditching it for a bottle but the cups were impossible that I just refilled my bottle each time, having to stop and pick up several cups to do this. Not brilliant!!
Despite all of this, I completed the half marathon in 2:33:20! Considering I was aiming for 2:30:00 I think that it went well. Also the final few miles (probably just after 2hrs), I felt exhausted, my legs were tired, and it was endless flat road until the stadium. We could see the stadium for about 2 miles which wasn’t great and we went around the stadium to go in the entrance the other side, then around the TOP part of the stadium once inside, to then go outside again to go into the track and 100m on the track (which I tried to sprint with the last bit of energy I had!)!
I feel it was a good day, even though I complained horrendously from about mile 10 and with all the people walking around me, I was ready to stop. BUT with my dad’s encouragement kept going and made it in a good time (for me), also my avg moving pace was 11:14 min/mi, which matches the pace of my 1hour runs!
On a final note, I feel better today than I did after my 10mile and 12mile training runs so I did something right. :)4 notes
